Improve Air Quality and Home Efficiency
A HRV is a heat recovery ventilator. So what is a heat recovery ventilator? It is basically does what a typical bathroom vent fan does, vents inside air outside. That only explains half of what a heat recovery ventilator does though.
Now it's time to talk about the other half, the heat recovery aspect of the heat recovery ventilator. When a typical bathroom fan runs air is being removed from the bathroom and home. That air is going to be made up by drawing air in from the outside. That can be either through a fresh air duct, often seen next to the furnace and water heater, or just through the cracks of the home. A HRV uses the heat from the inside air to warm the outside coming in. You are recovering heat from air that you are dumping outside anyway. It has a special heat exchanger in it. Both the air leaving the house and air entering the house from outside pass through the heat exchanger at the same time. However they are never in contact with each other, so odors never get mixed with the fresh air. Heat recovery ventilators will improve a home's efficiency and indoor air quality. During the winter in those cold weather states there is especially an increase in home efficiency. For every cubic foot of air you vent with an old bathroom fan, the same amount of cold outside air is brought inside. They can be run on timers, constant high or low speed, in timed intervals, or to satisfy a humidity control. It can give your home multiple air changes in one day. That is completely changing over the air in a home. Which improves indoor air quality.
