Reduce the Cost of Electric Water Heater Operation

Install a Timer

You want to install a timer on your electric hot water heater because electricity is more expensive than natural gas is most places. A water heater runs year round and that electric bill can get pretty expensive. Installing a timer can give you 5%-12% energy savings.

You set the timer for the power to the electric water heater to shut off at night or when know you won't use it. You can also set the timer to shut power off during the peak demand times. This way you know you won't be paying for the most expensive electricity.

Timers are relatively cheap. You can pick one up for under $100 and it will pay for itself in a year or two. The pricier timers allow you to program 7 day schedules for the water heater to be shut down. A nice feature that can lead to extra savings.

Installing the timer is doable task for most. A little wiring knowledge helps, but if you follow the directions provided with the timer you should be just fine.
